International Greeter Association

FAQ – Frequently asked Questions

FAQ for new destinations or greeters

How can I become a Greeter?

If there is a group in your city, contact them directly. Most groups are happy about more support.
If there is no group where you live, you can start your own group. All information how to do that can be found on our website.

Can a governmental organization become a member?

Yes, absolutely!
Many of our local Greeter organisations are supported by local governmental organisations, city councils or tourist offices.
We do ask governmental organisations to follow the same requirements to become a member as we ask non governmental organizations or individuals.

Is there a membership fee to the International Greeter Association?

Yes, there is a small fee if an organization is delivering a certain number of Greets. But it is free for the first year and if an organization is delivering only a few Greets. The membership fee is necessary to operate the website and to cover costs. IGA is a non-profit organization, so the membership fee is not used for any expenses which are not in accordance with the non-profit-status of the association.

What benefits come with being a Greeter?

Greeters enjoy making new friends, promoting intercultural exchange, building personal skills, and supporting sustainable tourism development in their community. Many Greeters like to learn about cultures of their guests, train their language skills and even learn about their own city while exploring it with their visitors.

How is a Greeter group funded?

There are no significant mandatory expenses associated with running a Greeter group. Greeter activities are volunteer-based, sometimes they receive donations or find local sponsors. They will never charge guests for their service or ask for tipps.

What support does the International Greeter Association provide?

They offer guidelines, networking, training, and online resources to help establish and run local Greeter groups professionally. During the setup process and beyond, a board member of IGA supports the new member personally and is available for all upcoming questions. IGA promotes the Greeter concept worldwide and operates a website to attract visitors and deliver requests to the local groups. IGA is a non-profit organization registered in Belgium, managed by a Board of Directors who are doing this on a voluntary basis.
