Discover Bremerhaven through a free walk with a Local

Thanks to its strategically located harbor on the Weser River and the sheltering embrace of the North Sea, Bremerhaven boasts an irresistible combination of maritime and urban flair. This lively port town inspires you to experience its special charm for yourself.

To gain an authentic perspective on the city, you might want to make contact with the Bremerhaven Greeters. This is a group of passionate local volunteers. They provide free walking city tours with the special benefit of an insiders’ perspective on their hometown. It is a great opportunity to learn the best-kept secrets of Bremerhaven – the special places and the special stories usually left out of the touristic mainstream. Imagine taking a walk through the busy Fischereihafen, learning about the yearly cycle of the fishing trade and more.

And there’s more to Bremerhaven than its famous attractions. Your local Greeter will show you quaint residential areas, tell you about the history of its impressive harbor, or report on its changes in the past 200 eventful years.

A walk in Bremerhaven just for you and completely free of charge
During an individual walk -we call them Greets-, just for you, your friends or your family, the Bremerhaven Greeters will show you their city as if you walked the streets with a friend. They are all volunteers, they do it because they love their city and they love to meet people. There is no tipping involved and there will be no groups. It's just for you, your family or your friends.

Remember: A Greet means meeting a local resident to walk around town with you as new friends. The first step will be to talk to the Greeter about the details of your personalized tour. It's not about taking part in a standardized tour, but about exploring the city with an expert volunteer .

Maximum six people!

Our core value #2 reads "Greeters welcome individuals and may serve small groups of up to six people."
The reason is that each Greet should be an opportunity to talk to each other and that seems impossible in bigger groups.
Also important: we do not mingle people from different requests but serve only you (and your friends).

Bremerhaven Greeters have undertaken to comply with the IGA Core Values.

Meet a local volunteer

Our core value #1  reads "Greeters are volunteers, a friendly face for those visiting a city."
It's true: Our Greeters love their city or town and they are proud to share this with guests.
How could you better discover the most interesting spots of a place?

Free service, no tipping

Our core value #3 reads "Meeting a Greeter is free of charge."
We do not follow a "give what you think is ok (but please give)" strategy. Greeters honestly do not like any tipping because what they give comes from their heart not because of any tipping expectation.
If you would like to support the Greeters as a whole you are welcome to donate to the International Greeter Association here.

Thank you very much for showing us some of Bremerhaven; past & present.
Even with the wind & rain, it was a perfect tour for us!  Standing in that room with the etching of the ship’s deck surrounding us, and then near where the passengers boarded for their journey to America–truly special for me.  It almost brought tears.

We enjoyed driving through the modern container/shipyard.  Learning more about you during our tour just added to the enjoyment.

The rest of our stay in Bremerhaven was also interesting as we spent time retracing emigration at the Auswanderer Haus, visited the Zoo am Meer, and read about the interesting history during our exploration of Historical Museum.  But your personal tour was the best!

We wish you the best.  Again, thank you!

I am writing to express our heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional experience we had during our trip to Bremerhaven, thanks to your organization and the wonderful volunteer guide, Heinrich.

As a family of four—Papa, Mama, daughter, and son—we thoroughly enjoyed our visit, especially the time spent in the historical museum Bremerhaven. Heinrich’s extensive knowledge about the city’s history and his engaging storytelling made the tour both educational and enjoyable for all of us. His passion for Bremerhaven’s heritage truly brought the museum to life and left a lasting impression on us.

Please extend our sincere thanks to Heinrich for his dedication and the memorable experience he provided. We greatly appreciate the efforts of your organization in making such enriching activities available to visitors.

Thank you once again for a wonderful afternoon in Bremerhaven.
